The sarong runner recently spotted in the Larian Keputeraan Sultan Azlan Shah, Kuala Kangsar. Photo courtesy of Sean Wong, heading to the 14km finishing line. The cutesy children with the pom pom on the left had big smiles seeing the sarong man run past them :)
It's not unusual to get lots of stares of disbelief, giggles and guffaws every time I run with my sarong. To be honest, I'm happy if I can put a smile on a runner's face, a spectator on the sidelines, the uniformed personnel on duty or just the motorist on the road whom I happen to run past. Then my job is done and I am truly satisfied.
Running to me itself is a passion and something I enjoy wholeheartedly. I run because I am happy to do so and the breakout of endorphins in my body brings joys to me. So, I figured I do want to share the joy with others too. The only way I do best is to be quirky and run with my sarong. It has never ever failed to bring a smile to just about anyone I come across.
Whacky and loony? Perhaps. Fun and enjoyable? Definitely :) and I tribute my runs in sarong to the late Ngae Koh Heing whom sadly, I didn't get the opportunity to know better. But he is one very inspirational dude to me in the running world! Don't get me wrong, he was serious about his running but he did it with full of joy and enjoyment. Something which we all should emulate after.
Food for though on this Monday, what do you run for?

10 waddles ...:
Congrats on being consistent with sarong. U rock Yimster!
Good question. I run for fitness, and to find an excuse to travel. PBs and everything else come as a bonus. Another way, yet not the only way, to exercise.
I run because by running, I am reminded of Daddy and how running greatly enriched his life.
From time and time again, I'm told by runners how Daddy in his own quiet way helped and motivated them along. How speed and timing was never the most important thing in running, but that he always looked out for the slower runners and made sure they ran safely.
I run because through running, I get to spend Sunday mornings with Mummy. We share stories about how our week went, we chat and laugh about our experiences. We wave high to all our runner friends and also in the process make new ones.
We are consoled by the fact that even though Daddy is no longer around to run with us, his spirit is still with us and lives through us.
I wish you had the chance to meet him, I think Daddy would have loved to wear a sarong and run together with you!
I run because it gives me some sort of calmness and making great friends besides being a running makcik lol .. i shd run in kain batik pulak kan?
