Ultra Meets Triathlete = Ultri?

If only I could be half of that dugong. Yeah, flabby and yet able to swim proper

I am hitting the panic button now. Honestly, there is no short cut to be good at something. Most definitely not at swimming. Having no formal training in swimming and relying solely on youtube and plenty of trial and errors, I thought I could swim. And I left it so late to start training on correcting my strokes and breathing synchronization. Yup, I only started it like 3 weeks ago.

And I am most certainly paying for it now! I had quite a number of 1km swims in the last 3 weeks. No, I lied. I only had three 1km swims with a paltry time of between 27 to 30mins. Yeah, slow like a snail. Just last week I seemed to have picked up a shoulder injury that caused a sharp pain every time I rotate my arms. And it didn't go away the next day. Nor the next 3 days. Desperation haunted me. Can't do much but rest and some ointment to heal it.

And that brings us to today. For the 1st time, I managed to clock 30 laps of 50m. Which translates to exactly 1.5km. This I had done without looking at my watch for the timing or number of laps. Just went with the feel. Pain in shoulders were gone. Phew. But it took me a long 44mins to complete 1.5km swim. There were some pauses in between laps to catch me breath. Terrible.

Still, I am out of time. Come Sunday, I will just have to manage that 1.5km swim one way or the other. I'm putting in a max of 60mins to complete that. And hope I don't get whacked left right and center. Obviously, I would start way behind in the swim discipline. Finishing the swim and finishing the tri would be my objective. The first is automatically a PB lol.

Note: Swimming on a 5 foot deep swimming pool was easy. Anything happens, i just stand up and catch my breath. Swimming in an endless depth lake? *big gulps comes to mind*. It will be sleepless nights till this Sunday for me. Feels just like when I first broke my virginity in a full marathon at the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2010.

That's was me FM devirginized in the 2010 SCKLM. Will I be smiling like that this Sunday? Certainly not now!

U know u could do it. Though that shoulder must suck kan. Been there before. But then, if the others like the akak2 and macik2 could do it, why can't u?
All the best. Belum cuba belum tahu. Get that niggling shoulder checked too ya.

Like whatever you do, you will excel the first time you do it, have confident.

Good luck on the race, i will be waiting eagerly for the race report and all the funky picture.

I am still at 150m, 10% of what i need to do, so, i guess Tri this year is out :(

KA, thanks. Will try lor. Too late to complain too much lol.

Khoo, a month ago I could hardly do 100m in a go without gulping in loads of water and struggling to breathe. End game is sufficient time to train and train proper with the right skills and techniques. Just no substitue for that. That's coming from someone who have ran a 100km and thought I could hack a 1.5km swim without the need to stop abruptly after 100m!

So its back to the drawing board for me in swimming after Kenyir. Loads to work on but trying to balance up the traning for 3 disciplines is pure madness i tell ya!

And i just want to finish with plenty of FUN this weekend. Hey, its my first time and the first time is the most pleasurable eh? :)

Slow and steady. You will nail this swim. I do understand the worry of nothing to hold on to or stand touching ground at sea. My own fears lol, but I guess once there and you know there is no choice and will just go. Good luck.

firstly, I Like reading your posts. It's candid, and has a nice perspective.I'M NOT a fantastic swimmer But perhaps I can share some tips for your own improvement.
I 've done my IM last year, and swam a 1:27(I felt I cld hv did better & targetted a >1:20swim).....I was told to use a 2 beat kick to save energy....
eRRRMMM...
fast forward to 3 Wks ago, I swam a degradatory 1.5km in 39 mins.I was furious & mad @ myself,I swam 3x times a week focusing on getting the sore spots,muscle tightness,pain,@ my neural pathways(6 BEAT KICK(aka: 1 arm stroke = 3 kicks)to adapt.I swam a PB at lake kenyir Tri @ 31 mins.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
dO NOT LISTEN to other ppl's ideology.
swimming frequency is extremely important.
I barely swam more than 45 mins in the past 2 weeks,But focused more on Breathing,& drills.
It PAID off big time.
UNLIKE the bike and run,the water doesn't care whether your arnold schwarzenegger or aunty Fatty.whoever can maintain good form, and hv a decent drag resistant positioning position in the water is bound to improve.
Cheers Bro,and all the best.
